Opposite to what producers do, I’m sampling a song by the late J Dilla and turning it into a Jazz Standard. Right now I am working on a Jazz version of this song. Dilla was a master of simplicity not taking away from the MC’s and really playing with their sound and vibes. First off the snare drum sound in the instrumental is captivating, and the clean, simple melody catches the listeners ear and sticks with you all day.

The song was originally released in 2000 on the album “Fantastic, Vol 2” by Slum Village. The producer is one of the most influencial DJ’s in Hip-Hop history and the instrumental for the Slum Village song “Fall in Love” a personal favorite of mine. I think almost every hip-hop head went through a J-Dilla stage at some point. This is also my favorite song to draw to. Robert Glasper is a big influence on me as a pianist myself, and the way he converges the old jazz standards with new hip-hop music stays so true to the culture and artists. At the same time, the song stays true to the original jazz recording. This song is an amazing achievement to begin with, all the different artists on the track work so well together and really sound unique and bring out the essence of hip-hop. DJ 9 th Wonder then remixed Glasper’s version of the song and got MC Common to freestyle over the beat. Jazz/Hip-Hop pianist Robert Glasper then made a hip-hop version featuring Erykah Badu in 2012. This song is originally a jazz standard by Mongo Santamaria in 1959. He collaborates frequently with other artists, taking on many other pseudonyms such as “Danger Doom” “MadVillain” and “Viktor Vaughn”.Īfro blue – 9 th Wonder, Robert Glasper, Common, Erykah Badu His unique sound captures so many different styles and forms. MFDOOM is one of my all time most influential artists. Also throughout the album Doom samples the narratives from the old cartoon shows such as “The Fantastic Four”, “Spiderman”, and “Superman” when the villain “Doom” is in the episode.

The vocal sample matched with the expression-full drums is very unique and matches perfectly with Doom’s evil, metaphorical rhyming. The whole album “Mm…Food” was a childhood favorite, but the song “One Beer” stuck out to me. In high school MFDOOM was one of my favorite artists.
